I built these boxes out of cedar with stainless screws and used fiberglass mesh. They have a removable bottom to make repotting less stressful on the tree. I am into year two with these and they are doing great. I did treat the wood with marine oil varnish so wood would get more life. If I make more I will use composite instead of wood.

The Idea of air pruning is the introduction of dry air into the root system. When this happens the apical cells at the root's tip become dehydrated. The plant responds by growing a pair of secondary roots that branch off of the initial root creating more compact feeder roots.

Plants Grown in traddition pots usually grow to the edge and if left unchecked they circle the pot. The root grows longer and begins to harden off its older growth with feeder roots closer to end of the elongated roots. Air Pruning keeps this from happening and with square shape roots will no be able to circle without terminating when they finally hit air.

The concept is sound and there are plenty of products on the maket for air pruning. the build your own is surprising expensive and time consumming so I would definatly recomend purchacing
